About the Woolworths Legal Team


Our Legal team supports the entire Group by providing thought leadership and professional, independent legal advice that addresses the company's risk profile and helps guide our teams to lead the market. We aspire to the highest professional standards and aim to deliver exceptional legal services with a strong commercial and strategic understanding.


The Opportunity


An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Property Lawyer to join our in-house Legal team, reporting to the General Counsel of Property & Development. We are looking for an experienced advisor with strong commercial acumen and legal skills to provide strategic and risk-balanced legal advice and services across the Australian activities of Woolworths Group. You will be a business facing, hands on professional, responsible for advising on a broad range of matters.

The team are located in Sydney usually working 2 days from our head office in Bella Vista and one day from our Surry Hills office.


What you’ll do


  • Independently managing a variety of property related legal matters, predominantly commercial leasing (including drafting, negotiating and finalising all required legal documents associated with our lease portfolio (both as landlord and as tenant) i.e. agreements for lease, contribution deeds etc with major landlords and retailers and any related activity; licences and land access arrangements), with the ability to support property acquisitions and disposals, mixed use developments, and development matters from concept to completion.

  • Providing day-to-day strategic and commercially astute advice on property related activity.

  • Providing advice in relation to make good obligations and enforcing amenity provisions across the national leasehold portfolio.

  • Support client negotiations and transactions to achieve commercial outcomes.

  • Providing strategic direction and managing property disputes and litigation as they arise; 

  • Collaborating with, providing direction and mentoring property lawyers and paralegals within the team.


What you’ll bring


You will bring high quality technical capability, well honed interpersonal skills, and the ability to build trusted and effective partnering relationships across the Group. To be successful in this role, you will bring:


  • Bachelor of Laws with 6-10 years experience PQE

  • Ideally with a highly regarded law firm property law experience; in house property law experience desirable.

  • Strong analytical skills and experience in developing and implementing legal strategies in a commercial context;

  • Highly self managed with dedicated to meet and exceed key performance indicators.

  • High levels of resilience to manage competing demands and business expectations, carrying  a large volume of diverse matters;

  • Strong partnering and influencing skills mindset with a focus on delivering exceptional client experiences.

  • Proven ability to problem solve and continuously improve the way things are done.

  • Constructive and authentic interpersonal skills.

  • Autonomous and self-sufficient with a desire to work collaboratively with peers and clients.

  • The capacity to deal confidently with stakeholders at all levels.

  • Superior negotiation, communication and influencing skills.

  • Composed, resilient and adaptive to the business’ changing needs.
