The Opportunity


Reporting to the Value Lead - Smart Controls we have a newly created position of Control Specialist with expertise in Pay. 


Sitting within the Smart Controls Squad in the Group Risk Platform, you will contribute to the delivery of the Group Risk objective of being confident that we are operating effectively to the Woolworths’ risk appetite, specifically by increasing controls competency and maturity across the Woolworths Group. Initially the focus will be in Pay however there will be opportunities to expand scope. 


What you’ll do


  • Lead the end-to-end delivery, and supporting the design, of controls-related review and assurance activities in order to assess and uplift our control effectiveness and maturity. 
  • Design and implement innovative, enduring solutions for complex control challenges, for example addressing design gaps based on a deep understanding of the applicable risk, seeking to automate and streamline controls where possible, and use technology (including AI) to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of controls review, monitoring and testing.
  • Act as a key controls advisor, building strong stakeholder relationships and representing the squad in cross-functional collaborations to provide expert guidance.
  • Drive continuous improvement in our controls practices by developing and enhancing frameworks, tools, and processes for control identification, documentation, monitoring and assurance.
  • Champion emerging trends and best practices in risk and controls, leading knowledge-sharing and training initiatives to uplift capability across the Group.


What you’ll bring


  • Strong understanding of controls and control design principles, including methodologies and best practices, as well as assurance and testing.
  • Subject matter expertise in Pay and Payroll-related control environments (including review, uplift and testing). 
  • Effective understanding of risk management frameworks and tools, including across the 3 lines of defence/accountability.
  • Ability to critically analyse data, identify trends, and propose solutions to address control design issues and any residual risk challenges.
  • A creative and solutions-oriented approach to developing innovative solutions and improving existing practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey complex risk and controls information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to lead projects, guide teams, and foster a collaborative and supportive environment.
  • Strong relationship-building skills to effectively manage and influence relationships and outcomes.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic and evolving work environment, readily embracing new challenges and responsibilities.
